On iPhone, eSIM support is one rule: XS/XR or newer, with a single well-known exception. Android has no equivalent rule, because “Android phone” covers dozens of manufacturers, each with its own eSIM policy, its own settings menu, and its own carrier-locked variants sold in different countries. The only reliable way to know if yours will work in Japan is to check your specific phone, not the Android brand in general.

Quick answer

  • Check your phone's own settings if look for "Add eSIM" or "Download a SIM instead?" under your network settings — the wording and location vary by manufacturer
  • Check how it was sold, not just the model if the same model can ship with or without eSIM depending on the country and carrier it was sold through
  • Use a physical SIM if you can't confirm eSIM if every eSIM provider on this page also sells a physical SIM that works regardless of eSIM support

Why there’s no single Android answer

Apple controls the hardware for every iPhone it sells, so an eSIM policy can be a blanket rule by model year. Android is an operating system that dozens of manufacturers build phones around, and each one decides independently whether to include eSIM hardware, whether to enable it in software, and whether a given regional or carrier version gets to use it at all. A phone bought outright in one country can be eSIM-capable, while the same model number sold through a carrier elsewhere ships without it. That’s why “does my Android phone support eSIM” only has a useful answer once you’re looking at your actual device.

Where to look, by manufacturer

Google Pixel (4a and later) and Samsung Galaxy (S20 and later, plus most recent Z Fold/Flip models) have the widest eSIM support among Android phones and are the two families most reports online refer to when they say “Android eSIM works fine.” The menu path still differs between them: on Pixel it’s under Settings > Network & internet > SIMs > Add eSIM, and on Samsung it’s Settings > Connections > SIM manager > Add eSIM. Other manufacturers (OnePlus, Xiaomi, Oppo, and others) support eSIM on some models and not others, with the setting usually living somewhere under network or connection settings — search your phone’s Settings app for “eSIM” if you can’t find it by browsing.

The variant problem: same model, different answer

This is the part iPhone buyers don’t have to think about. A Galaxy or Pixel bought directly from the manufacturer is more likely to support eSIM than the same model bought through certain carriers, some of which sell region-locked variants without eSIM enabled, or that restrict eSIM downloads to their own network. If your phone came from a carrier rather than the manufacturer directly, check with that carrier specifically, since the model name alone won’t tell you which variant you have.

Dual-line limits differ from iPhone too

Most recent Android phones with eSIM support dual-SIM, letting you run a Japan eSIM for data alongside your home line for calls and texts, the same concept as on iPhone. The limits on how many lines can be active at once, and how many eSIM profiles you can store, vary by manufacturer rather than following one Apple-wide number — check your phone’s SIM manager screen for how many active lines it allows before you rely on keeping your home number live during the trip.

Both providers’ eSIMs install the same way regardless of phone brand: you get a QR code by email after checkout, scan it in your eSIM settings, and the profile sits inactive until you turn it on. Need a real Japanese phone number rather than data only? Mobal’s voice eSIM installs through the same process.

Can’t confirm your phone supports eSIM at all? A physical SIM sidesteps the question entirely — see our eSIM vs Physical SIM comparison. And if your Android phone is carrier-locked rather than missing eSIM hardware, that’s a separate problem covered in our phone unlocking guide.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I check if my specific Android phone supports eSIM?+

Open Settings and search for "eSIM," or check your manufacturer's known path — Pixel uses Network & internet > SIMs > Add eSIM, Samsung uses Connections > SIM manager > Add eSIM. If you can't find the option, your phone likely doesn't support it, or that variant has it disabled.

Why doesn't my Android phone show an eSIM option when a friend's identical model does?+

The same model number can ship in different variants depending on the country and carrier it was sold through. A carrier-sold unit is more likely to have eSIM restricted or disabled than one bought directly from the manufacturer.

Can I keep my home number active alongside a Japan eSIM on Android?+

Most recent Android phones with eSIM support dual-SIM the same way iPhone does, but the exact limit on active lines and stored profiles varies by manufacturer — check your phone's SIM manager screen.

What should I do if my Android phone doesn't support eSIM?+

Use a physical SIM instead — every eSIM provider covered on this site also sells a physical SIM option that works on any phone with a SIM tray.
